This is just an introduction on what has been happening in mass media industry in Indonesia.
Indonesia’s printed media consists of about 750 daily, weekly and monthly. It is a great improvement compare to 282 printed media before the political reformation (1998). However, it should be noted that the industry once reached more than 2,000 publishings on 2001 along with the deregulation on mass media industry.
Although radio industry trying it best to cope with the new technology such as streaming, the industry has been suffering. The imbalanced advertising expenditure (apex) in which radio industry in 2007 only accounted 1.4 % while it reached not less than 44 % of total mass media audiences becomes concern of both radio professionals and investors. With around 1,000 radio stations, Indonesia is able to cover only 85 % of it area. This data is included Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI), the public radio stations. However, there are more than 2,000 illegal radio stations (no license) across the country. This phenomenon becomes major issue for Indonesia Broadcasting Commission (KPI).
Indonesia has 10 commercial TV stations with national broadcasting capability plus one public television, Televisi Republik Indonesia (TVRI). There has been a growing trends to establish more and more local TV stations. As per end of 2004 there are no less than 40 local TV stations, both with license and no license yet.
The use of internet as communication and information channel has been developing. There are several companies have been serving as commercial/professional news portal. This trend is believed to be increasing.
